Hallsberg’s new locomotive workshop ready for move-in

The new locomotive workshop in Hallsberg built for Siemens Mobility, is ready to move in. The combined operational ability and expertise of Train Alliance, Siemens, Adriansson Mark & Anläggning with its subcontractors, has enabled the workshop to be built in record time after the first sod was broken on December 14, 2022. Siemens can now move in and get started in the facility.

In collaboration with Siemens engineers, Train Alliance has designed and established the concept behind this high-performance production facility. The workshop is flexibly designed and adapted for the new generation of Vectron locomotives that are increasingly being delivered to Sweden. The workshop has an extra high internal ceiling to be able to handle module changes from the engine rooms and plenty of space around the vehicles for efficient maintenance while upholding internal workshop logistics.

The workshop’s capacity is adapted for 35-ton lifting stands, which means that locomotives of up to 140 tons can be lifted. Its railway infrastructure consists of electrified tracks that connect to the Rala area’s common railway infrastructure and further into the Swedish Transport Administration’s main system. That all tracks inside and outside the workshop are built for a maximum permissible axle pressure of 25 tons ensures its availability for the future. The strategic location at the largest freight station in the Nordics, creates great potential for future expansion, which the workshop is also prepared for.

Work environment and safety pervade the entire facility, including roof platforms around the locomotive to create a closed room for work on vehicle roofs. Environmental goals have been reached through active choices of materials, products and construction technology solutions and the workshop meets the requirements of the Taxonomy. The support section with staff spaces is well adapted to support and streamline maintenance production, while this part can be easily expanded.

Through active presence, well-thought-out choices and continuous follow-ups from Train Alliance and the supplier Adriansson Mark & Anläggning, the budget has been met despite times of inflation and financial unrest.

Adjustments, some additions, and fine-tuning remain before Train Alliance transitions into its role as facility partner with management responsibility for both the building and the railway infrastructure. On November 22, Siemens Mobility AB plans to hold an opening ceremony with invited guests from near and far.

We are grateful for having been given the trust to supply a locomotive workshop to the world-leading railway vehicle manufacturer Siemens and look forward to a long-term cooperation.
