SMARTCargo

Multimodal logistics solutions

SMARTCargo’s multimodal logistics platform is planned to become a hub for cargo handling with a strategic location close to Arlanda Airport and Stockholm with good connections to western, southern and northern Sweden via the existing core rail network.

Stockholm is a designated node on the core network of the Scandinavian-Mediterranean TEN-T corridor and Arlanda Airport is a core network airport.

In addition, the Rikskombiterminalen in Rosersberg is classified as a railway terminal on the comprehensive transport network.

TrainAlliance creates opportunities

Rail operations are an environmentally friendly solution to the ever-increasing need for transport. TrainAlliance’s overall assessment is that measures are required to meet the needs and reduce the shortcomings that exist in the system today that risk increasing in the future.

A well-functioning infrastructure creates the conditions for businesses to continue to develop and for road transport to be limited. In the long term, this can contribute to a reduction of greenhouse gases, which benefits the EU’s climate goals.

Relevance to Swedish transport policy goals

According to the Swedish government’s strategic goals, Sweden will be one of the world’s first countries with a fossil-free transport system. This means, among other things, that transport will constantly shift from road to rail and shipping.

The national climate goals of at least a 70 percent reduction in carbon dioxide emissions from domestic transport by 2030 (excluding aviation) and net-zero emissions by 2045 are also driving forces.

Effects on the environment and climate

The Swedish Transport Administration has forecast an increased need for freight transport of about 65 per cent by 2040, where freight transport work is expected to increase more by road than by rail, under today’s conditions.

On the road transport side, there is a shift towards heavier trucks, which has increased by 22 per cent over the past 10 years, while in 2020, heavy trucks accounted for 80 per cent of the total traffic volume for trucks.

This is where the function of the lock terminals becomes important.

Need

The transport sector in Sweden is large and varied.

The industry’s approximately 30,000 companies create jobs for almost 240,000 people and have a total turnover of almost SEK 500 billion annually.
